Stemming from a love for Murakami’s writing and his imaginative stories, I decided to use my second doctoral solo recital as an opportunity to share some of the classical piano music selections from his various novels, as well as introduce a couple of contemporary works by composers also inspired by his writing. The result was a program of imaginative music, recalling the mystery and inventiveness of Murakami’s storytelling.
“Practically everything I know about writing, then, I learned from music. It may sound paradoxical to say so, but if I had not been so obsessed with music, I might not have become a novelist. Even now, almost 30 years later, I continue to learn a great deal about writing from good music.” - Haruki Murakami
