Taiwanese-American pianist Yvonne Chen is a believer in reaching out to as many people as possible, performing a wide variety of music on various types of venues. From playing in hospitals, schools, and community centers to performing in Carnegie Hall, she enjoys catering her programming to the various audiences in site-specific performances, as well as creating a logical yet balanced array of music blending the familiar with the unfamiliar, the old and the new, and the traditional with the avant-garde in a single program.
Most recently, she performed throughout Leipzig with her piano quartet as student ambassadors in an exchange program with the University of Music and Theater “Mendelssohn-Bartholdy”. In Houston, where she is currently based, she is a co-founder of contemporary music ensemble, Loop38.
A native of suburban Washington, D.C., Ms. Chen received her B.M. from the Juilliard School under Matti Raekallio and her M.M. from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. She is currently the Benjamin Armistead Shepherd Teaching Fellow at the Shepherd School, where she is pursuing a doctorate under the tutelage of Brian Connelly.
